Using AI to generate an image of myself was an experience I initially expected would be challenging, but the whole process was both exciting and challenging at the same time. I used DALL-E to produce an AI-generated selfie that reflected my perception of me. By initially giving it a background of Indian ethnicity, I emphasised that my eyes and hair are naturally very different from that of a quintessential Indian’s which is what makes people often question my ethnicity.
To further personalize this image, I went on to add the “UofA” logo to my hoodie as I associate much of my identity to being a university student. With this being my last semester, I wanted to represent myself in the way I perceive myself the most - exploring Edmonton through cafes and spaces where I can spend hours studying and working. I thrive in a busy and aesthetic environment, it sparks my creativity - which is what I aimed to depict through this selfie.
I realised that giving DALL-E too many prompts in a single message would often make it not take every prompt into account. Therefore, I gave it specific prompts about my eye color, hair and the environment specifications all, separately. Additionally, I would have to specify what I did not want changed from the image it produced and exactly what I wanted change or else it would make its own changes. Hence, being patient and creative with giving proper background references for changes was key to completing this assignment.
