Final Reflection

The first thing this course taught me is that we can actually use multimodal methods to communicate online. We can use images, videos, audio, and links to express our ideas in an interesting and attractive way. I feel that adding links or other sources to my posts can help me get more followers and likes. It is a good way to catch your readers interest and encourage them to explore the topic further. The way people read online is very different from how they read an academic paper. Online readers have a very short attention span; its like they are constantly channel-flipping, so you have to work hard to keep them interested.

The most interesting part for me is module 3 on AI narratives. Im glad AI 2041: Ten Visions for Our Future is included in the course materials. Ive read this book before. It contains ten short science fiction stories written by Qiufan Chen, and each story is followed by  a technical analysis by Kai-Fu Lee. Chens stories make me both excited and worried about a future governed by AI, while Kai-Fu Lee is much more optimistic, almost as if every problem can be solved with better tech. Overall, this book is a blueprint for the AI age. I highly recommend it to anyone curious about how AI will change our daily lives.

I am a content creator on Rednote, a Chinese social media platform for videos and blogs. After taking this course, Im aware there is a power dynamic in how I present myself online. The way I narrate my story is closely tied to my identity and how I want others to see me. But the thing I struggle with most is finding a balance between sharing  my life and protecting my privacy. I know AI can generate digital twins or stylized selfies that mask your real face, but  I still feel uncomfortable if my real-life friends or acquaintance find an account where I share my private, emotional moments. I also have to be very careful not to post anything sensitive on Chinese platforms because the censorship is strict. Because of this, my social media is usually just comments on recent news or study tips.

I try not to use AI to create my content but its a good tool for brainstorming. AI has changed how people communicate. You can not avoid AI-generated content if you are still using social medias. On Rednote, you can even use the platforms buit-in AI to summarize a 3-minute video or the main points in a comment section. People just are  not as patient as they used to be now that there are shorcuts to information. But AI hallucination cause a lot of misinformation. Thats why I think module 5 on misinformation and disinformation is so timely. I try not to mislead my readers, so I always double-check everything if I use AI to help me write. Overall, I really enjoy the class and learned a lot!
