Final Reflection - Danielle Brown

I really enjoyed COMM 555 – New Media Narratives. The knowledge I gained in this course greatly broadened my digital literacy, which will benefit me both personally and professionally.

One major takeaway for me was realizing just how many multimodal tools are available for digital communication. The sheer number of platforms can sometimes feel overwhelming. There’s so much to think about when communicating online, but this course made me value the responsibility we all have when sharing information—especially since there are endless ways to share it now. I often reflect on my own university days, before social media existed (which probably ages me a bit 😊), and it really was a different world. Today, people are photographed everywhere—sometimes willingly, sometimes by others without their consent. Because photo sharing is so common and happens so quickly, privacy often gets overlooked and isn’t always enforced. It’s important for everyone to be more conscious of their actions, as the internet and social media make it easy for anyone to discover more about you than you might expect.

Has this change been positive? There are pros and cons, but digital media has developed for over a century and continues to grow. While these advances offer benefits, we must also be prepared to question them when necessary.

Overall, this course provided valuable insights and encouraged thoughtful reflection. It emphasized the importance of being prepared for technological advancements and recognizing the positive outcomes that AI development can bring, while also highlighting the responsibility to contribute to its improvement. Moving forward, I will exercise caution when sharing information and carefully evaluate its accuracy.

Anticipating continued progress in the realm of digital technology and artificial intelligence over the next decade.
