This course has offered various opportunities to develop and deepen my digital literacy. Through the readings assigned that provide an in-depth analysis of subject matters such as technophilia, and the development and evolution of AI, as well as the assignments that provided the opportunity, I found COMM 555 - New Media Narratives a unique and thought-provoking experience. Further, I found the content extremely applicable to our current technological environment. As a student with a major in Media studies, I am looking for a job in communications and media, and this content is very relevant to the work that I am looking into doing in my career. I am very grateful that I was able to take this course, as I feel that it has better prepared me for my future work. I believe that Media studies, although very new and still developing, will soon become a very popular major. As our society and technological environment continue to develop, it is important that we as individuals gain the tools and knowledge to develop along with it. Courses such as COMM 555: New Media Narratives provide this knowledge. One suggestion that I have is for more assignments that utilize developing technology, such as AI, but require critical thinking to manipulate this technology, and perhaps challenge the traditional notions and beliefs that society holds towards these technologies. To elaborate, many individuals see AI tools in a negative light, “They are taking our jobs, etc.”. Although these concerns are completely valid and important to acknowledge, it is also important that we see the positive aspects of AI, such as its ability to find solutions to important crises, such as climate change and the destruction of our environment by harmful pollutants such as fossil fuels. I believe that it is important to look at all developments, whether that be developments in technology or other fields, through a positive lens, and always look for ways that we can benefit from these developments. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this course, and I would recommend it to any individual looking to grow their digital literacy.
