Assignment 4: Transliteration of Selfie Analysis by Shen Dong

1. Journey of Creation

Steps taken to create digital self-representation

For this assignment, I am critiquing my own Ai generated self identity in terms of technical and social dimensions. I chose King Kangxi’s image to mash with my image because I admired the emperor’s legacy. Kangxi is a very generous and ethical ruler and he holds great respect for Roman Catholicism. He was introduced to Catholicism by the missionary when he was young and became one of the greatest emperors in Chinese history. I have great admiration for Catholicism and ethical ruling.

Tools and technologies used

For my selfie, I used Deevid AI to generate five prompts.

Share any challenges faced and how you overcame them

                I did not encounter challenges.

2. Self-Representation and Identity

How digital representation aligns with or diverges from my physical-world identity, identity performance, audience perception, and the influence of online platforms.

As Liu argues, “Selfies,” or photos of oneself, and stories have the potential to give a face to the social issues experienced by marginalized groups. Selfies with an accompanying hashtag become a major form of participation in online social movements, where they are used to challenge stereotypes. (Liu, pg.72) Many movements have gained wide popularity and international attention, challenging stereotypes around topics such as race, gender, appearance, and professions (e.g #YesAllWomen, #IfTheyGunnedMeDown, #ILookLikeAnEngineer). (Liu, pg.73) I argue that Manchurian people is a marginalized minority group in China. Its population is around 10million but fairly represented. However, since the Qing dynasty, Manchu has made significant progress in terms of politics and culture for China.

3. Ethical and Cultural Dimensions

Ethical or cultural implications

Although Manchu is a minority but it's actually well represented. I tried to mesh my selfie with the Qing dynasty emperor Kangxi since he is a great emperor with tremendous passion for ethical governance. He rarely travels outside of the forbidden city.  This is an idealistic portrayal of an ethical emperor.

4. Transliteracy Reflection

Process of translating my academic critical analysis into a blog post.

I find translating critical analysis into a blog post is a great way to share information and get feed back.

How adapting to the blog format impacted the delivery of your message.

I think when doing a blog post, we need to take into consideration of how our readers perceive the content we wrote.

To be more persuasive, we need to be more transmissive and connect with our readers emotionally rather than just giving out facts.

5. Multimodal Enhancement
