This experience made me keenly aware of how old I am. I'm old enough that I remember what life was like before the internet and social media, and boy have we come a long way! Was it simpler? Perhaps, but I don't think it was necessarily better either. People tend to romanticize the past but they forget (or purposely leave out) the challenges it took to communicate on a global scale, like the way we do today. Information wasn't readily available, the technology was awkward, and not everyone had access. This project only reminded me of those struggles and made me appreciate what we can do today.
Hi Sandra! Thank you for sharing your digital literacy journey. I really appreciated how clearly you walked us through your experiences over time, especially from the early days of email and chat rooms to more recent social media platforms. Your reflection makes it easy to see how digital literacy is something that develops gradually alongside technology, rather than something people simply “have” or “don’t have.”
ReplyDeleteI found your discussion of early internet experiences particularly interesting, especially your awareness of scams, chain emails, and catfishing. It stood out to me that even in the early stages of your online engagement, you were already learning critical skills around trust, identity, and online safety. This connects well to broader conversations in the course about how digital spaces have always required critical awareness, even before social media became widespread.
Your reflections on texting and mobile technology also offered a helpful reminder of how much effort communication used to require compared to how seamless it feels now. The contrast you draw between earlier limitations and today’s convenience adds depth to your post and helps contextualize current digital habits.
One thing I was curious about while watching your video is how these earlier experiences influence the way you use platforms like Facebook or TikTok today. For example, does your long history with digital media affect how you think about privacy, algorithms, or time spent online? Overall, your video provides a thoughtful and relatable perspective on how digital literacy evolves, and it encouraged me to reflect on my own experiences as well.
Hi Jalynn! As a matter of fact, yes, my earlier experiences have shaped how I interact on platforms like Facebook and TikTok. I'm cautious about what I see and tend to question everything, especially with the rise of AI content. To be honest, I don't often post on those platforms, and if I do it's nothing personal. I value my privacy and don't feel the need to share every aspect of my life with strangers. Having said that though, I will "like" posts and share posts that I like. Overall, I enjoy social media but I am also wary of it too.
